R. Thomas Murphy, CELA

Tom Murphy, Esq., CELA is the President of the Law Firm of R. Thomas Murphy & Associates, P.C. and has practiced law in Pennsylvania since 1994. Tom is also a Board Certified Elder Law Attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation, and recognized by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. He is a graduate of Drexel University in Philadelphia and the Widener University School of Law in Harrisburg.

Professionally, Tom is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Elder Law Committee. He is also on the faculty of the Pennsylvania Bar Institute providing continuing legal education to attorneys throughout the Commonwealth. Since 2006, Mr. Murphy has been selected annually as a “Super Lawyer” in the area of Elder Law by Philadelphia Magazine’s Law and Politics Edition. On Sunday mornings, Tom is a contributing guest on the Hagerstown, Maryland Channel 25 TV program, “Contemporary Retirement.” Mr. Murphy limits his practice to Elder Law, Estate Planning and Probate/Estate Administration.

Mr. Murphy is also on the board of directors of The Family Heritage Trust Company of Frederick, Maryland. The Trust Company provides trust and fiduciary services for individuals, estates and individuals with special needs.

Jared S. Childers, JD, LL.M., CELA

Jared Childers has been with R. Thomas Murphy & Associates, P.C. as an attorney since 2009 where he focuses his practice solely on estate and elder law issues. Jared has been involved in the elder law legal community since 2005, receiving the Certified Elder Law Attorney (CELA) designation as certified by the National Elder Law Foundation, as authorized by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, in 2015.

Mr. Childers maintains his membership in the Pennsylvania Bar Association, Elder Law section; the Pennsylvania Association of Elder Law Attorneys (PAELA); along with the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA). Jared has provided continuing legal education to attorneys in Pennsylvania lecturing on Medicaid long term care benefits for the elderly through the Pennsylvania Bar Institute (PBI). He has published several articles relating to cross-border retirement issues and speaks frequently at local community, religious, and civic organizations on estate and elder law related topics. For several years he supervised a site for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA), which offered free income tax assistance to low-income individuals while starting his legal practice.

Jared graduated from Penn State Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, PA with his juris doctorate and earned an LL.M. from New York University in taxation. He received his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University majoring in Italian and an associate degree from LDS Business College in business. Prior to law school, he worked as a Personal Financial Representative and Insurance Agent for a major national insurance company.
